Day 22 Phuket to Maiton Island on a Speed Boat
It's another early morning after a late return last night but I'm so looking forward to a speed boat ride! It's Wednesday and we meet a 8am in the lobby. To test the tsunami emergency loud speaker system, they play the Thailand National Anthem every Wednesday at 8am. Here's a snippet...
We drive an hour to Ao Chalang Pier to hop on the boat for our 20 minute ride to Maiton Private Island. They recommend anyone with motion sickness sit in the far back for less bouncing. So I'm sitting RIGHT IN FRONT OF THREE OUTBOARD MOTORS!
The seas were very rough and by the time we reached the island, Helen (my seat mate) and I were drenched from the spray of the boat but we didn't get sick. We stopped at the dock and dropped off everyone who didn't want to go snorkeling along with some coolers of food.
On the backside of this island, the Adaman Sea was calm and the fish plentiful. I didn't go in because I don't do saltwater OR put my face in the water. So I stayed on board and took photos of everyone else as they enjoyed their snorkeling.
Returning to the pier at the resort, we were treated with a fabulous lunch followed by a hike up to the view point.
The hike was a constant up incline and I had to stop quite a few times to catch my breath but I made it! Coming down was so much easier. LOL
We have an hour left before returning to Ao Chalang Pier so many went snorkeling again in the area surrounded by a buoy rope line while I went to the pool for a cool water soak. Snorkeling wasn't fun as the current kept pushing everyone towards shore.
The boat ride was a joy on our return as the seas had subsided.
The van ride back to Proud Phuket near Sirinat National Park went quickly and we're on our own for dinner tonight.
What a great day on the sea! I'm going to miss this group of Road Scholars as they are intelligent with very interesting backgrounds and experiences.
I would highly recommend a Road Scholar tour to everyone. Traveling as a single was a snap as I made new friends with whom I always had someone to chat. There were five couples and six singles in the group. The coordinator, Dome, had every detail planned and our daily excursions went off without a single glitch. Road Scholar is great and I know I have another tour in my future.
This guy, from Maiton Island, has the right idea and I'm off to bed.

| Dome decides to enjoy himself but he wears his life vest with his legs through the arm holes so when he snorkels, the vest makes him look like a peacock (below). |
